Our Books, Our Shelves

Friends! I have been remiss! I apologize for getting so far behind in reading and responding to your posts. I hope you are all well and I’m looking forward to catching up!

Austin Library, Lander County, Nevada

I’ve been busy of late with revising my historical fiction manuscript after receiving feedback from an agent and a publisher. It’s been fun, in that odd way that perhaps only other writers can understand—a challenge, a wrestling with words, a content shift—all of it within a world that was once mine alone and that now I must share if it is ever to come to fruition as a novel that lives in the world.

Field Trip! I can’t remember where I saw this exercise in visualization. It was likely from one of you, so please accept my apologies for not remembering the source, and let me know if it was you. I love the idea: Go to a book store or a library and find the spot on the shelf where your book would be shelved if it were published. Make a space for your beautiful creation and take a picture. What books will be nestled up to yours?

In the Austin, Nevada library, my book would be shelved right next to Jodi Picoult’s if it were published today!

Your Turn! I’d love to see your spaces! And if you already have a book or books out there, it would be wonderful to see where they sit on the shelf. Please share!

  1. Your book will be fabulous, Lori, and will be right up there soon next to Jodi Picoult’s book on that shelf!! Enjoy what’s left of the summer, if you can!!

    • You are so kind, Anita! Thank you! I’m outside enjoying my front yard at the moment- breezy with just enough cloud cover to keep the temperature down. We may even get rain! It’s lovely. How is your summer going?

      • That sounds lovely, Lori! We are finally having nice cool temperatures in New England (though today was a little warm), and it is wonderful! My summer is going fine, but I am more looking forward to the Fall, when I can really enjoy getting out more! Ha! Glad you are doing well! Take good care, and looking forward to seeing your book on the shelves soon!

    • Thank you, Pete! I think one of the reasons I loved teaching so much (one of the million!) was that I loved being a student, too. As a teacher, I was always learning something new. I adore it when someone gives me a writing assignment, even to this day! I hope your days are filled with your favorite things!

  7. There are worst places to be than between Jodi Picoult and Richards Powers! Best wishes on your exciting project!

    • I agree, Marie! I was surprised when I realized that would be the placement, at least in a small library that doesn’t have separate sections for different genres of fictions such as ours in Austin. Great company!!! Thank you for commenting!

While I have not written a book myself, I was thrilled to see a friends book on the shelves in the Austin Library. I sent her a picture of her book on your shelves, and she texted that it made her day to see that her book had made it all the way to Austin, Nevada from her home in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Lori, it is my greatest wish that I will come across your book as I peruse the shelves in another library someday. And you can bet that I will check it out after sending a photo to you.!
